São Tomé and Príncipe is an archipelago with two main islands located about 140 kilometres apart and about 250 and 225 kilometres, respectively, off the northwestern coast of Gabon. São Tomé, the sizable southern island, is situated just north of the equator. It was named in honor of Saint Thomas by Portuguese explorers who happened to discover these desert islands on his feast day - 21/12/1471.

one of the oldest Portuguese towns southern of the Tagus river. It has been occupied since pre-historic times, existing on its vicinities about one and a half hundred megalithic monuments.
It’s natural position, the highest hill in the area and proximity to the deep Guadiana valley, made it a location of strategic importance.
After the Alqueva dam construction the Guadiana river overflowed in the Mediterranean landscape offering another visual impact hoping to be of astrategic meaning too. (14 photos)

Not so far from the Canary islands, and from the marvellous coasts of Senegal, lays the lovely archipelago of Cabo Verde…a land of music, poetry and, as an old local song says, of saudade, which in Portuguese stays for melancholy.
