King Victor Emanuel II leads the Vittoriano into battle.
You'll have to learn to like the Vittoriano. It's something of an acquired taste, a thing that slowly develops while visiting the re-opened museum of the Risorgimento in its giant vaults, looking at the people visiting the integrated monument for the Ignoto Militi (unknown soldier) and taking in the marvelous panoramic views from its terraces. It's a real national icon. When you look at it from the Mercati Traianei all things fall into place. It isn't a pretty building but it gives a bod statement how the Italians felt when their land was reunited at the end of the 19th century
