I've been to Rome quite often - the best thing would go from Main Station (you'll get there most likely with a bus from the airport) towards the colloseum and all the surroundings, and then head towards the vatican. Some walking to be done, but worth it!

Walk around the San Lorenzo district. This studenty district, just to the south-east of Stazione Termini is Rome at its most alternative. Packed with cheap eateries, lefty-leaning bars and boutique shops, it’s a welcome break from the touristy centre. Plus, it’s the home of the best chocolate in Rome.

If you're a gamer and love Assassin's Creed, Rome is a nostalgic awesomeness around every corner. Try Piazza Navona. St. Peter's Square. The Colosseum, the Pantheon & the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, you're in foe a visual treat..

Where do you start? Rome is chalk full of awesome things to do. Besides the sights like Pantheon, Colosseum and the numerous piazzas, I would certainly need to recommend:

San Crispino - amazing gelato shop with unique flavors (eg Honey Ginger Cinnamon). It's near the Trevi Fountain

Cacio e Pepe - off via avezzana, for some authentic Roman pasta. Try their namesake dish Cacio e pepe (cheese/pepper pasta)

I really enjoyed Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Forum Romanum, the Spanish Steps and Fontana di Trevi

Just like the gentleman above me said - I highly recommend going to Piazza Navona, Forum Romanum and the Pantheon. It is a mighty sight. Fontana di Trevi can be quite crowded but is a nice landmark nonetheless. The Colosseum was not worth it to me. It is more impressive from the outside
