To mikee: Eger castle

  • Well, Eger castle is sort of a combination of the remaining walls, with a Baroque building at the top now containing a museum. It's a nice view and very worth visiting, I think but not as intact as Hunedoara.

There's a lot of history to the Eger castle though in relation to the Ottoman invasions and how this place held out so long with only a few hundred people. The very very good local red wine called Bulls Blood (Bikaver) is closely tied into the legend. I'd say that the castle is more a part of Eger and gives it atmosphere, but Eger is more like a total of it's parts, the castle just being one piece. It's a beautiful little city with lots of Baroque buildings and churches, an intact Turkish minaret you can climb, as well as the castle.
