Photographer's Note

The hotel that we stayed at on Lamu runs a turtle conservation project. Turtles eggs had traditionally been in a local aphrodisiac, so the project started by paying the local poachers a premium for each egg that hatched with a substantial bonus for each turtle that returned to the beach for laying season.

To be honest, on our way to see the turtles hatching, I was a bit skeptical about how interesting the process would be, but in the end I (and about 20 other tourists) found myself in a little cheering section, protecting the tiny turtles from crabs and other predators as the turtles made their way to the sea for the first time.

For more info on the project, and for another shot of the turtles approach the sea, see the workshop.
