Photographer's Note
I don't have a lot to say about today's three photos. They were all taken in the combined port and market area of Mopti, central Mali, in February 1982, and they were all scanned from Kodachromes slides.
It wasn't my intention to show as many persons as possible. It just happened to be a busy area. I noted in my diary that I had hardly ever seen anything as colourful and crowded before, not even in India or Indonesia.
Looking at it now I am a bit disappointed that two persons stepped into the photo at the bottom, but such things happen in crowds.
The Bani river is just to the left outside this photo, as is evident from WS #2. The river is seen in both workshop photos.

Hello Gert,
All three pictures and especially the main upload show us the beauty of a very chaotic place.
Not only because of the many people present but also by the unconventional arrangement of the marketplace.
This doesn't look like a tourist trap :)
A pirogue trip that lasts between two and five days will be preferred by few. Do locals travel by pirogue for such long distances?
Fantastic travel impressions from a not so obvious destination despite the fact that many French people travelled there, you wrote.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Gert,
My impression was exactly the same as yours, I had hardly ever seen anything as colourful and crowded before. A wonderful photograph of such a busy place!
Your photograph has collected so many details that I have studied the main photograph for quite a long time!
There is so much happening and so many different types of clothing to peruse!
Almost everyone seems to carry things on their heads, except for the lady carrying the baby on her back!
Can you remember what those angled screens were for.
Are they for sale or to protect produce from the sun?
Despite the emphasis on people, without a vehicle in sight, there is a sign for Total petrol. This must be an early example of a pedestrianised area!
Not only have you included the people but, also the habitations which look very basic, maybe even slums!
I love the material that the lady is wearing in the w/s. African dress is often very colourful. Do the people print their own fabrics?
I have really enjoyed perusing your photographs, today. What a record of the area, nearly 40 years ago.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Gert
So many people, but of course it was taken years ago the Corona virus crisis! We can feel the buzz of this place, the bargains made to buy some goods. I am amazed how you recorded each day in your life to give us some true details, and also some guesses!
Have a nice day

Hi Gert
I've said it before but I will repeat it again - your photos of crowds always amaze me as your timing and composition are so good. I actually even like that basket at the bottom - carried by one of the person's you are complaining about. A vibrant image full of life.
Great photos of life by the river, one of them reminded me of all the occasions when I missed boat trips because I didn't have time!
Best wishes

Hi Gert,
The presence of the crowd is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the colorful clothings and of a daily life scen. The light is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello Gert
Another great shot from your days in Mali. I don't mind people stepping into the frame at all. They just add to the buzz of the place. I also like the inclusionof the Total sign at the top, that's couleur locale too, in a way.

Hej Gert,
It certainly is a very busy scene. People, baskets, huts. They all seem to be stacked on top of each other! And framing is excellent, to give plenty of room for all the action.

Hej Gert,
Du fangede virkelig mange mennesker i ét billede her. Det er et meget travlt område, hvilket giver et meget livligt billede med masser at se og mange fine farver, der står godt frem fra den grå baggrund. Fint lys også.

Hello Gert, once again, three fascinating pictures from 38 years ago!
This shot could be a contender for a page in the Where's Wally series, there are so many people!
I notice all styles of dress, some traditional and some more western.
There seems to be a lot of corrugated iron in their buildings, unsure of whether they are actually dwellings or not.
Excellent documentary shots.
Kind regards, Jean.

Gert, that fluvial port on the Bani river bank is teeming with activity. I suppose some of the goods carried on the boats are sold directly in that market. The numerous baskets, the customers and the vendors animate the scene. We can observe many working children and teenagers in the crowd. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Dear Gert,
As you noted, its quite crowded and colourful. I would even say, it seems a bit unreal. Nevertheless, the Kodachrome didn't fail you. I like all three photos, but the cheerful sailor is my personal favourite. I would fave it, if it was the main upload.
Have a nice evening!

Hello Gert, The Workshop pictures are nice, I like the view of the boats, but not to compare with the main one. Fantastic crowd, on the slope, when they are one above the other it looks very impressive. Stunning composition. I am very happy when I manage to be the only tourist, especially in a very exotic place. But it is not always possible. Interesting also the houses up there. Fantastic picture. Why have you waited with it for so long?

Hi Gert.
I am amazed at the amount of people that gather here, and I wonder what they do? I think it is a market type, they sell and buy or even change ... without a doubt the variety of colors give a great chromatism, there is also a great poverty with the surrounding houses.
Very nice color, which together with good sharpness and optimal lighting, gives great quality to the image.
Well done. I like very much
You have a good day.
Very best regards
Luis.

Hello Gert,
Three lovely photographs from Mali, all of excellent quality and very well scanned too.
Looking at your main photograph, I should dread to think what devastation a few coronaviruses would do here what with the tightly packed crowds we see in this market, yet it's a wonderful picture full of life and colourful vibrancy - and I shouldn't worry about the two people who suddenly appeared at the bottom of the picture - I think they also add to the splendid chaos. And because it's such a god photograph, I could spend ages just looking and looking at all the many characters in this scene.
I very much like the tall slender lady in red, perhaps trying to decide which boat to take home. And the boatman too, standing up high at one end of his slender boat: he might have been a splendid companion to take you on a week's voyage to your next destination!
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.
P.S. I see that you call these boats "pirogues". I was actually in what was called a "pirogue" in Madagascar and that was a much smaller craft - basically a long dug-out boat which was very slender (barely enough width between the sides to fit one's bottom) - and it would have been very unstable had it not been for a single outrigger on one side which floated maybe 2 metres away from the main hull. You can see a very poor photograph of them here: https://www.treklens.com/viewphotos.php?l=5&p=285291
Or is the word "pirogue" used for really any size of long thin boat?

A vibrant and vividly presented scene from the port-market at the river-bank. It taken time to review the many people in action but rightly chosen the main picture here.
Have a nice new day,

Hi Gert, Travel by water always appeals to me, and the port images in the WS are therefore very appealing. 3-5 days on the river would have been a fantastic experience, perhaps not for everyone...
The photos are of your usual high standard and your scanner has done them justice. cheers, Steve

Hello Gert,
Three new photos from Mopti that show us the colorful life of the city in 1982.
Photos that you look at longer than the average TE photo because they are so rich in interesting details.
All in all, it seems like a peaceful society. I hope there is still some of that left today.
The people who enter the photo do not disturb me. They show that the scene continues outside the frame of the photo.Have a nice Sunday, Groet Rob

Hi Gert
easy to see why people have been liking this one, as do i.
there's just SO much jam packed into the scene. Where do I even start looking. Of course I start with the old run down building and make my way down. two things come to mind right away....the amount of garbage and debris seen on the ground on the bottom left...and the TOTAL sign on the top right...what's that advertising? what a shot! cheers

Hello Gert,
There is so much going on in this photo! All of the people, items, and architecture in the background, melt together like a patchwork quilt. This looks chaotic to me, but there must be some sense of order for the local population.
