Photographer's Note
This may just look like a pleasant wooded hill, with more ancient ruins scattered around, but it's one of the most sacred places of Christendom.
That's why I decided to post the photo accompanied by the result of my researches, as we only saw the place from afar unfortunately, our time at Hierapolis-Pamukkale being short.
Philip was one of the 12 Apostles, a figure of some prominence in the 4th Gospel of St John where he is described as one of the first followers of Jesus.
He is mentioned with the "miraculous feeding of the 5000" and with Jesus' discourse at the Last Supper.
He was from Bethsaida on the Northern shore of the sea of Galilee, the city of Andrew and Peter, and had previously been a disciple of John the Baptist.
After Jesus' resurrection, Philip preached in Greece, Syria and Asia Minor.
He is said to have met a Martyr's death in Hierapolis around 80AD.
A Martyrium is a sacred place built over the tomb of a martyr.
St Philip's martyrium was built between the 4th and 5th century in one of the most remarkable structures in all of ancient Christendom.
In the 7th century, a disastrous earthquake accompanied by a fire destroyed the entire complex.
Photo taken with the zoom from Hierapolis agora.
New sizes being allowed by TE, I decided to go slowly and try 850 pix max.
4 WS complete the little dossier.

Hi Marie Louise,
Thank you so much for sharing this photo with us. I lived in Turkey for half my life, but did not realize Hierapolis was where Apostle Philip was martyred.
Apart from being informative, your photo is very appealing. I like the fact that you included just a little bit of the sky. I also like how the path leads one's eyes all the way to the Martyrium.
Best Regards,
MT

Bonjour Marie Louise
Amicalement.

Hello MarieLouise.
Very interesting to note that introduces us to the understanding of the image you give us is a magnificent composition with the remains of ancient buildings, hill dotted with pines background gives a nice complement to the image.
Very good illumination and outstanding sharpness to dwell on the details.
Well done.
Have a nice day.
Best wishes.
Luis.
P / D. Referring to the photo that you told me, I'll tell you all that straw in the street is to acclimate the medieval era, like bundles of grain next to the houses, here is an important festival celebrated medieval.

Salut Marie-Louise,
avec cette belle photo je peux connaître un lieu historique pour les chrétiens, où les ruines se combinent avec le paysage des collines, dans un bel effet de camouflage.
Bonne gestion de lumière et de couleurs, c'est une bonne photo.
Bien amicalement,
Josep

Hello Marie-Louise
yes indeed from afar the ruins look haphazard but without much focal points. As I had mentioned before, its the large tombs which attracted me the most here, as being different from the other ruins we saw in Ephesus. very nice with soothing colours!
