Photographer's Note
In this life, there are a lot of questions to be sure. Most of them asked by me do not include the basic "where will I sleep tonight?" or "will I find something to eat today?" So as this homeless man searches the horizon, I am reminded of some of these more basic questions as I retire to my bed after a nice, hot shower and a large dinner.
Many of you live in or have been to lands and areas in which such basic questions are asked nearly every day by many. I find great value in seeing your images of these wonderful people who take the time to smile and say hello to a person with a camera.
This photo was taken on La Jolla beach in San Diego, California. Most folks on the beach that day were like me: well fed and having a good time relaxing. This man seemed a bit more subdued as he searched the horizon.

did he find what he was looking for? that's the question i ask myself when i see this photo... perhaps the weather is reflecting his consternation about his situation. simple composition that makes me think.. which makes it a good one. well done

Hi David,
Why asking question with no feasible solutions? Just look at this innocent gull at right. This guy will not ask such questions but one thing is for sure. Tomorrow morning, it will get up early and will eat all the scampies and will left no one more for the lazy-still-sleeping-gulls.

Hi David, the natural shadows of darkness that frame this entire composition really add to the eerieness of the scene. Until I read this was taken in SD, I thought it could have been anywhere on a beach in the third world.

Great moody shot David. It seems slightly underexposed, but I like it that way. I would have never guessed this was San Diego. Your note is very interesting, and really makes me think. In life we all have questions, but finding the answers is usually easier when you have friends and family (a support group) to help you find the answers. I feel sorry for this man. He probably has no one to help him with his questions, but I hope he finds the answers.

I am going to have to put you on my favorites list because this is the third time I have been drawn to click on one of your thumbnails. This is a wonderfully unique beach photo. It is dark and the subect is not typical of what you might see at the beach. It looks somewhat surreal. I like the light and deep colors. Great note as well.

Hello David,
Very powerful picture, with a little bit of red against an ocean of gray tones. The clouds are out of this world, and so is the slightly moving person who seems to meditate while observing the horizon.
Good job - Izzet Keribar

Hello,
Une image soulignant la solitude. Une très bonne composition. Tu as su conserver ces couleurs fonçés dues à ce ciel couvert tout en t'appuyant sur la bande plus claire dans l'eau.
Bien vu.

You have made a grey day very thoughtful and it makes you feel the coldness of the day with surfers in the background with thier steamers on catching the waves and the man with his parker on.Yet he cannot afford any warm shoes to wear. Well Done Richard.

Lovely work with light in this one, David.
Excellent contrast across the middle part of the frame.
I like the depth created by having shot this man from the back and quite near, and wavy shapes in the sky, sea and the sandy beach.
Deep colour tones help the atmosphere and your note is painfully good!

You've created mood here really expertly, David, with the overall blue tone and the darkness along the bottom and top of the frame. The man's pose is perfect, caught mid-step, gazing at the sea. Maybe this isn't one for the San Diego tourist board, but it's a great one for TE. Something to think about for today. Regards, Ken.

A beautiful, almost timeless and poetic image, David - the man wandering at the beach makes for a contemplative subject, and the framing is good with him at the left, giving space to look and walk into. The post-work is also nice, enhancing the contrasting and moody weather setting.

Salut David

Very good David. The way you have caught the darkness and light are exeptional. I have always that that Southern California was rather sunny, but you have shown there can be dark and dreary days also. This posting make you think. Continue.

Hi David,
Superb imagery. The exposure level is just right, and all the elements are seen in partial or complete silhouette. The red clothing adds a nice touch of extra hue here. Even the seagull is well placed to balance the right side of the frame. A poignant shot with a fine note. You captured the moment so well.

Hi David,
I am someone who have more questions then answers. More I live, more I find that answers tend to disappear! But no, I don't ask myself the two questions that is in your note because those are questions I still have an answer. Because I decided, out of necessity, that I wanted to have food on a regular basis and hopefully a roof over my head. But I pay the price for that: I work!
About your photo, I really like the moody atmosphere, the dark clouds. But especially that man walking bare feet with a walking stick. Very good colors, to my taste. A very beautiful photo David!

Hi David,
You have framed a very thought provoking composition. The light in the clouds seems to promise hope for the seeker walking along the beach. To me, it looks as though the surfers, clouds and waves are all bathed in moonlight, but I know about the coastal overcast along this shore. I'd be interested in knowing how you achieved this stunning moonlit effect out of our 'June Gloom.'

This is a stunning and telling picture. To me it is almost religious in atmosphere, look and tone. I suppose it is the overall subdued colour and the dramatic dark clouds in the distance. The baran landscape also adds to the mood of desperation too. Very good capture.

Hi David!
Such a special composition, such a special atmosphere!
You are definitely right when you say "theatre and drama add to my style of photography. Good photos often are dramatic and tell a story" (Intro). I can say/feel this photo is full of dramatism and tells a thoughtful/deep story.

The entire view ie very dramatic, the composition allows us to feel the moody place very well. The patch of light falling on the man's shouldr adds mystery. The cloudy sky and shore with those weeds adds lines to the poem. This one touched my heart......

Hi again David, another stunning photograph that supports the vision described in your Note. A classical composition and very nice observation to make the exposure while he has one foot off the ground - it adds vitality. Superb pastel shades and yet another wonderful sky. One very minor niggle is that there appear to be some artefacts and halo-ing around the man but certainly not enough to detract from the quality of the photograph. Another favourite. Stephen

Hi David,
A homeless is not a theme we'd expected from a La Jolla photo. Anyway, this could be in many other places. Your picture, with that dramatic weather and light, presents very well your idea as you wrote in the note.
A nice detail is that the lonely seagull seems to lead the lonely man.
