Photographer's Note
After a few pictures from my vacations in Greece, I return to where I left before going on holiday.
This is the "red oasis" of Algeria, Timimoun, a fair distance southwest of Algiers. This is not a stitch of several digital photos but a scan of an old-fashioned slide, heavily cropped to get rid of vast areas of sand and sky.
I have posted several pictures from this fascinating oasis before. This photo was taken in the late morning as I was returning from a visit to the local palm grove, where I met this girl. Left of the centre in this view you can see the spot where I took this photo. Just a little bit further to the right, but from another angle, I took this photo. I think that the building next to the car was the hotel where I stayed. According to a sign the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg had been among the earlier guests. She had stayed in room #9 in 1926.
To see this at full size you can either right-click and open it in a new window, or go to the beta version, depending on what kind of computer you are using.

Hej Gert,

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Hello Gert,
this is really fascinating, an organized town in an oasis of a great desert. A comprehensive view with superb depth and clarity. Your note guides us around and offers us the exciting opportunity to recognize in a broader context settings we've already seen and studied in your other pictures from this place. I like very much the rich contrasting colours that convey the warmth, tranquility and mystery of the oasis. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
Ourania

Hello Hert - I do enjoy looking at the shots from your archives. This panoramic crop is so descriptive an overview of the village. I'm impressed with the scan quality, very good details considering the large amount of cropping and the size here on the beta version. Warm regards Rosemary
PS Is that an ice-cream van on the left?

Good morning, Gert,
I like this full size version, fine details of the Algerian village. In my mind an oasis is more green and compact place, but I not often have been in a desert. This view reminds me the Bedouins village in Egypt. I see the cars change the camels for these people.
Have a great weekend!

Hi Gert, I still use only beta version (except for upload) so I enjoy this big format photo. it is a summary of this red oasis series. fascinating place and splendid quality iof this panorama after almost 40 years. Funny these buildings red and white and also there is a mosque. much more interesting than a beach in Greece, I suppose.
I hope to post something new on the evening :).
have a great weekend

Hi Gert
Another goodie oldie stuff and unexpectedly in pano format guided by the beta version which is indeed useful. A breath taking oasis town with the sweeping view full of depth in great lighting and the best colors rendition and the well balanced compo. The small fig gives the idea and indication of vastness of space, and your best post processing has definitely enhanced the image really well. Congrats.
Best regards

Hej Gert
A great panorama with a real sense of space and loneliness. The scene is really exotic to our western trained eyes. The red of the landscape contrasts really nicely with the blue sky.
hejdå och trevlig helg

Hi Gert
you know that method you did where you added a photo into your note by highlighting the words 'this girl' 'this photo'...I still don't know how to do that!!!!
And our dear friend John wrote me an email describing how to do it but I still don't understand. Perhaps I'm missing something in my brain!
anyways....
the crop was effective to show us the main features, but I still wouldn't have minded seeing all the red sand, i think it looks cool because its so unique to the area. But I understand why you chose to do it this way.
I guess its safe to say the 'roads' of sand won't be paved anytime soon.
it must have been quite the experience to see this place in person, good for you to travel to these places. They are all wonderful photos to see from the past. The Irony is that they're probably still looking very similar today.
enjoy your weekend

Hello Gert,
I think this cut version only in original size working well, where we can appreciate all the fine details, at the center in BG I seem to see a fountain, but I'm not sure, the two-tone contrast well and we can understand the 'atmosphere of the remote village in the desert...excellent job...
have a good WE...

Hello Gert, the quality of the original slide shines through in this thoroughly enjoyable scene,it seems incredible that this is just a portion of the original slide.
There is a great deal to observe throughout the whole area of the oasis, from the tiny figures to the design of the buildings it is such an interesting and informative daily life and travel photograph.
Just lovely.
Kind regards Les.

Hej Gert,

Hello Gert,
This feels just right as a photograph since I have just been reading a book set in the deserts of N. Africa.
Your judicious cropping has rendered a photograph with a panoramic feeling, very much like those that are stitched. You have captured the atmosphere perfectly with the predominance of orange and the mudbrick walls.
Have a great day,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
This is so exiotic panorama view, so it's interesting and impressive to see this desert oasis with red ground and red houses. And, it's gentle to eyes seeing the greenery in back. The whole is harmonized well by the fine color combination of ground/house, grennery and clean blue sky. And, a good note.
Kind regards,
mikio

Hello Gert
A fine picture which you cropped well to the pano format. The red colour dominates, but I cannot help ask what is the white structure in the far BG. Has the mud structure being painted white?
Your picture allows our eyes to sweep into the centre of the picture absorbing the details
Best Regards

Again these amazing colours this time at the other end of the day. The format suits the subject really well, even though it's cropped, I presume you could still print this to a very narrow A3?
Thanks for the detailed description illustrated with photos - interesting summary of your trip. :)
Best wishes

Ciao Gert,
I flew over Algeria from Morocco to Istanbul so it's nice to see what I missed. It is a poorer country than most other North African States but rich in culture and history as well as landmarks and scenery & this image supports that view. Wonderful warm cold color contrasts between the red sand and mudbrick houses and the blue sky. The wide angled crop works well here. Tfs!

A wonderful panoramic shot of that city located in Sahara desert, another excellent archive you save Gert, the architecture is mainly maked up of red bricks, a precious document bringing the viewers to another period
All the best, have a good monday

Hej Gert,
en otroligt klar bild, trots att den är från 1975. Massor av intressanta detaljer i en sagolik omgivning med vackra färger.
Förmodligen har du fotograferat bilden i mellanformat eller stor format eller i sektioner.
Mycket imponerande. En fantastisk bild!
Vänliga hälsningar
