A pic taken on the top of he El Haouaria caves.These are situated 2 km away from the village of El Haouaria, by the sea, not far from the “real Cape Bon” this” finger” that points towards Europe marking the southern edge of the Straights of Sicily through which most maritime traffic in the Mediterranean passes.
The caves were sandstone quarries already in use during Punic times, in the VIIth and VIth centuries BC, although more intensely quarried during Roman times. During Antiquity this stone was used in the construction of the coastal towns and their main monuments, in particular the capital, Carthage.This “monument” consists of a succession of “rooms”, in fact they were excavated and emptied through a narrow opening reaching deep into the mine and forming a space in the form of a pyramid.
On the surface, at the tip of a promontory stretching into the sea, near the openings leading into the quarry, there are traces of excavation having taken place from above ground.

SELVAGGIO EST

El Haouaria è forse la località turistica tunisina più vicina all'Italia, tra lei e la Sicilia si distendono 140 km di mare pescoso, mentre l'isola di Pantelleria si trova ancora più vicina, ad una ottantina di chilometri dalla punta di Cap Bon. Dopo Gibilterra El Haouaria è considerato il punto d'africa più vicino all'Europa.
Qui il paesaggio pianeggiante della zona centrale della penisola, inizia a diventare più aspro man mano che ci si avvicna a Cap Bon (Jebel Sidi Abiod), e là dove il mare passa dalle zone sabbiose a tratti prevalentemente rocciosi, la costa si fa più interessante e adatta ad una vacanza in grado di soddisfare un po' tutti i gusti.
El Haouaria è anche famosa per la presenza delle cave romane, un luogo spettacolare che si trova sulla costa occidentale di Cap Bon. Il sito è conosciuto con il nome di Ghar el-Kebir, e fu proprio qui che i romani attinsero la maggior parte delle pietre per la costruzione degli insediamenti che costituirono l'antica Cartagine, distrutta con la terza guerra punica.
Il colore caldo delle rocce, la luce che penetra all'interno dalle aperture, ed il blu profondo del mare a fianco, rendono il sito davvero interessante.
Ottimi panorami e tramonti struggenti si possono osservare seguendo la strada asfaltata che conduce in cima al Jebel Sidi Abiod che domina sul Cap Bon con vista sul sottostante faro.

What an interesting and informative note you have given us - it reminds me of my Latin lessons from 50 years ago - "Delenda Carthago est"!

And a delightful photograph too - so beautiful in its sheer simplicity of composition. The sharp definition of the foreground rocks and their contrast with the deep blue sea stands out before the distant mountains shrouded in soft mist. The colours are beautiful, the light divine, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness exquisite.

I love the meeting of the dry and harsh looking land with the ocean Luciano. This coast line reminds me a little of the one here in Namibia with the minimal of vegetation but here we see rocks rather than endless sand. Contrasting with the pin-sharp FG, we see in the distance a soft, misted landscape, is that a lighthouse I see far off? Simple and beautiful image with a fascinating note. Have a lovely day. haha,I like your title-intriguing!Now,after opening the image I know what you mean:)
And the view you provide us here is delightful-simple combination of russet rocks and blue sea,but this is exactly what makes your composition so eye-catching.There´s nothing more needed to create such amazing visual effect.Maby not the best place to lying on th ebeach or to swim,but definitely a picturesque one for photographers.

davvero sapiente ed effettiva l' utilizzazione delle diagonali per disegnare il paesaggio interessante accanto al mare. C' e' ottimo senso di profondita', mi piacciono moltissimo le tonalita' caldi che svaniscono verso lo sfondo, come fanno anche quelle fredde. Le tessiture e le ombre sottilissime sono rese benissimo. Questa costa e' molto invitante ad esplorare. Complimenti e grazie!

Luciano, of course these are the colors of the East part of Tunisia, wild and rocky, nothing to do with the north where everything is so green, and nothing to do with south where everything is a desert..

Che storia ha questo luogo. La bellezza della spiaggia é indiscutabile, ma la storia di essa é proprio affascinante. La nebbie sopra ha dato anche piú atmosfera, ed un senso di isolamento e tranquillitá. Incredibile il fatto che non cé nessuno sulla spiaggia. Beata te, una spiaggia solo per te, come quella di Valter in Ibiza.
