‘Meknes - Bookmark of Meknes’

The photo was taken in Meknes, in the mausoleum of Ismail Moulay, the great sultan who ruled from 1672 to 1727.

This sultan of the Alaouite dynasty is the most important figure in the history of the city.
He made Meknes to his residence, was responsible for several large construction projects and transformed Meknes into a city with imperial airs.
During his reign a city wall was built as well as many mosques, storehouses and the royal granaries and stables.

For these projects often materials of the Roman city of Volubilis were used. Volubilis is located just a few kilometers further.

After his death his son Moulay Abdallah took over. In 1755 however, an earthquake destroyed a major part of Ismail's projects.

In Morocco Ismail Moulay is known because he drove the English from Tangier.

The mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is a delight for the eye and certainly a must to visit.

The photo shown here is not the most beautiful part of that mausoleum, but I enjoyed to make this bookmark from a picture I took in the entrance hall.
