Photographer's Note

In 2007 we spent a night in Sendai before visiting nearby Matsushima which is often described as one of the three most scenic sites in Japan.

Today Sendai is close to the epicentre of the largest earthquake to hit Japan. The 8.9 magnitude earthquake, the 10 metre tsunami it triggered and the explosion at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant have caused unprecedented damage.

I remember Sendai as a non-hectic and colourful city with wide tree-lined streets. This is a tribute to the people of Sendai - our thoughts are with you.
