Photographer's Note

Inaugurated on December 30, 1951 as a bridge Marechal Carmona, which in time would become known as "de Vila Franca," was one of the largest public works carried out in Portugal and a landmark of the old regime. It was the first crossing over the Tagus in Lisbon Grande, significantly shortening the distance between Porto and Vila Franca Alto (Benavente). With 1224 meters in length, including 520 on the river, the bridge was built in a thousand days and cost $ 130 million escudos.

Vila Franca de Xira (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈvilɐ ˈfɾɐ̃kɐ dɨ ˈʃiɾɐ]) is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 317.7 km² and a total population of 133,224 inhabitants. Situated on the west bank of the River Tagus, just 32 km north-east of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, Vila Franca de Xira is said to have been founded by French followers of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, around 1200.

The town is mostly famous for its bull-running festivals in July and October. Bulls are raised in the salty marshlands of the Ribatejo, which is also a notable breeding ground for the magnificent Lusitano horse, esteemed for its quick reflexes and maneuverability.

A number of brightly-coloured Portuguese bullfighting costumes are on display in the ethnographic museum in the town's bullring, the Praça de Toiros (or Touros) Palha Blanco. Nearby, the town's Misericórdia church features striking 18th-century azulejos (glazed tiles). You can find too the Museum of Neo-Realism.
3 km south of Vila Franca de Xira lies the Lezíria Grande Equestrian Centre, where visitors can watch stylish displays of the impressive Lusitano horses. The centre also stages typical bullfighting spectacles in its outdoor bullring. Visitors can ride Lusitano horses and take dressage lessons at the Quinta de São Sebastião, a sprawling estate at Arruda dos Vinhos, 11 km west of Vila Franca de Xira.
The municipality is composed of 11 parishes, and is located in the District of Lisbon.

A perfect marriage of color and textures between the sky and the water. I like how the sky bleeds its color into the water near the bridge. Nice POV too.

I colori sono spettacolari.

Olà Gonçalo,

Very nice, very impressive, very efficience. The large FG and the propsect open to the very graphic bridge give an incredible depht to the image. suoerb colors in the sky but too in the river. i like too the black color of the bridge which arise very well.

The point of view is sending my eyes toward the bridge which is giving depth to the composition. It is also showing the details and colors of the architecture of the Marechal Carmona bridge. Usaing the gradual tobacco filter has a special effect on the colors of the picture. Have a nice day.

esta ponte faz parte de minha história pessoal, toda vez que vou a ptgl é ela que serve de portão para a terra dos meus ancestrais, o ptgl do coração começa a se abrir depois dela, lindas lembranças de todas as vezes que a cruzei. sempre tive vontade de tirar uma foto de uma igreja erguida do outro lado, cercada de girassóis, mas nunca quiseram parar o carro para eu tomar a tal foto. haha.
linda foto, as linhas simples da ponte bem destacadas nesta atmosfera dourada. para´béns pela foto e pela nota.

This is just stunning!
The bridge creates a fine separation into thirds, but it also creates a pleasing lead across the frame.
The sky appears to coming ouit of my monitor!
