Photographer's Note
Compact pack ice covered the water surface at the north end of Lemaire channel. Pack ice results from wind and currents pushing drift ice together; its concentration is measured in terms of how much of the surface it covers; in this case no water was visible, thus the measurement of 10/10 pack ice here.
It was a very strange feeling to be traveling over what appeared to be solid surface.

I was this month of this year very close to this place... Our vessel turned back because of hard ice conditions... We turned west to Port Lockroy and then to Neumayer Channel.
What is the name of your icebreaker?
It is amasing!
Thanks for share.

it must be a spectacular trip to do that !
I like the atmosphère, cold time and lights. Not a great shot technical, but very interesting to show to us. Thanks you.

Excellent note here David, and a shot of the ice to go with it. I often look at 'ice forecasts' and don't fully understand what they mean. The photo is a bit low on detail, difficult lighting I expect, it looks very flat and maybe not all that bright. What does the Professor Multovosky do? Is it a research vessel? Is this how you are getting around to all these interesting places? Again, kudos for bringing this part of the world to TE!

There are few pictures of Antartica! You are one of the lucky people in this world that were there. Grat picture. I love the angle. It shows the magnitude and the power of the place.
What does 10/10 pack ice mean?
