Photographer's Note

In contrast with the rugged landscape that covers most of Afghanistan, flowers here tend to stand out and become even more brilliant than if they were to be surrounded by say- peaceful grass covered meadows. I’ve come to discover that Afghans love their flowers, from the littlest of children to the toughest of commanders. I always find it interesting in some of the remote mud built villages we visit, where brown is the color of 95% of everything you see (and things look as the though you could be stepping 2,000 years back into biblical times), that it is not unusual to walk inside a small modest mosque to find it beautifully decorated with colorful paintings of vines and flowers on walls and pillars.
