Photographer's Note

I thought that after all the images of sad kids I have uploaded it may be worth showing some playful ones. These young boys are already doing a grown up job but seem to be able to find some fun in it, even though "playful" doesn't necessarily mean "happy". The one with his head down was actually dozing off.

I was walking along this unpaved road hoping for a person to appear to provide me with a subject to photograph on this lovely autumnal background. I got lucky, with 4 persons and 4 animals appearing suddenly from around the bend.

The image was taken in the town of Khandud, the regional capital where we stopped to register me as a visitor. "Town" and "capital" make it sound grand but in fact it's about 100 metres long. When we were waiting in the registration office, a passing cow stopped to have a good look at me through the window. Still, it does have a more "urban" feel than any other village I visited in Wakhan - it has a few shops and a mosque. "It's for visitors only", whispered my guide Azim, not even trying to hide his disapproval. Indeed, the local Ismaili Muslims worship in shrines like the ones I posted photos of in WS to this upload:

Two "nothing special" photos of Khandud in WS.
