Photographer's Note

Khor Virap monastery seen in this picture is one of the most popular destinations in Armenia, primarily because it is where Grigor Luisavorich (St. Gregory the Illuminator) was imprisoned for 13 years before curing King Trdat III of a disease. This caused the conversion of the king and Armenia into the first officially Christian nation in the world in the year 301. To this day you can visit the underground chamber he was imprisoned. Its surrounding offers magnificent views of the Mt. Ararat where the smaller one is called Sis and the bigger one is called Masis by the Armenians. Throughout their history, Mt. Ararat is considered sacred by the armenians. The mountains belong to Turkey today and their are called Küçük Agri and Büyük Agri, respectively.
