Photographer's Note

The transformation of China from a communist to capitalist economic system has captivated photographers, writers and sundry other visitors to the Middle Kingdom since the 1980s. Yet, with our procession of photographs emphasising the rapid advance of capitalist modernity, the underside of that process remains in the shadow. Where now lie skyscrapers, before were the tracks of fishing villages or farmlands. The glamour of a city such as Pudong contrasts with the lives of migrant workers flooding Chinese cities in search of livelihood as the countryside disintegrates. As a foreign photographer one can attempt to capture these contradictions, but as a local to organise against and protest these conditions would lead to prison.

As a side note, this photograph is almost certainly taken in the exact same location as this photograph by Tibo.
