Drepung Monastery - Detail of a wall - Tibet, China.

Situated 5 kilometers from the western suburb of Lhasa (3.650 m altitude), the Drepung Monastery is known as the most important monastery of Gelugpa in Tibetan Buddhism.

It is considered one of the 'Three Great Monasteries' (the other two are the Ganden Monastery and the Sera Monastery), covering an area of 250,000 square meters (299,007 square yards). The monestary was established in 1416 and held up to 7,700 monks. Since 1959, their number fell. Now, around 1500 monks study in the monastery and 150 new students arrive every year.
