Photographer's Note

Dadun is a Bao'an village up in the hills of south-western Gansu. It's a couple of hours' walk from Dahejia, luckily we managed to find a small public bus to take us back.

The Bao'an (also Bonan) people are an ethnic group living in Gansu and Qinghai provinces in northwestern China. They are muslims, speak a Mongolic language and are famed for producing beautifully decorated knives of high quality.

This picture shows four kids in front of the gate of a house on the edge of the village.

Believe me...at first they were very, very shy.
