Photographer's Note

Just a few km outside Kashgar lies the tomb of Abakh Hoja, known in Chinese as Xiang Fei (the Fragrant Concubine). She was the only Uyghur consort, of Qing Dynasty emperor Qianlong's 41 wives. She spent 28 years in Beijing, abiding to Islamic practice, and in the end, the emperor had her clothes sent back in a coffin to their present location. Her real resting place, however, is among the Eastern Qing Tombs, outside of Beijing.

This is a detail of one of the tomb walls. Sadly, many of the tiles are now missing from the large dome, though they weren't even recently; I have seen photos from the 1980s with no tiles missing. Coincidentally, many of the earthen tombs of local Uyghurs in the cemetery nearby have green tiles of the exact same shape and colour above their entrances...
