Photographer's Note

Our tour leader had promised to take us to a typical Chinese village in the vicinity of Shanghai. I expected old wooden houses but found nothing of that sort. But in one house there was this old woman sitting in a corner, and from a hole somewhere in the roof there was a beam of sunlight coming inside the house close to her.On the wall I found a hanging old straw hat which must have belonged to the woman, and I created a small studio on location. A white newspaper on the ground (for reflections on her face and the inside of the hat) did the trick. It is always difficult to handle such a strong light in the dark, therefore I underexposed down to minus two stops. I also used my tripod, but the real challenge was about the beam of light moving at an incredible speed. The woman looked very old, and she hardly communicated with me.
