Defiance, a photo from Dili, West

Photographer's Note

East-Timor is located geographically in Oceania, although it is sometimes assigned to Asia instead. Consists of the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecussi-Ambeno, an exclave of East Timor situated on the northwestern side of the island, surrounded by West Timor.

Since East-Timor became independent, no serious photographic work has been done. At least not an in-depth work, because simply it's not easy. Thus, this image and some more I'll post here are, in a way, unique and are the result of many hours and effort to mingle. Some moments where registered only because, at some point, I started to be seen as one of them and not a mere foreigner.

This kid was pretending he was some kind of "Bruce Lee", which is frequent among east timorese young boys, as they watch a lot of fighting movies, namely from Bolywood and Holywood. The elastics around the wrists are something to be proud of and can be used for a lot of games.

That is awesome. The depth protrayed by the out of focus hand in front and the blurred figure in the background, plus the intensity in his eyes, are stunning. I can't wait to see more of your East Timor shots.

His pose is marvelous! Looks like Bruce Lee ;) I love his good, colored sharp face and eyes, but also blurring hands and backgrounds. You photographed very well. Congratulations.

Great image! i love the intensity in the boy's eyes. The lighting is superb and brings out the sking tones, and the sand. this must have been quite an experience, congratulations and I hope to see more like this.

Shutter speed should have been high. Seems that the outer parts are out of focus. However the idea is good.

amazing perspective, i really love the depth. The hand is amazing. The colours. the sand. the lighting. the expression. Sad his thumb was covering part of his expressive eye, but still, a really great shot, and nice to see East Timor respresented here. Very intense and strong, and nicely composed.

Hope to see many more shots of the beautiful nation! I hope things are getting better since the troubles.
