Pati Block, Badwani District...

This was once a land which was hidden under a thick forest cover. Today almost nothing grows here.

Alchohol has been one of the biggest weaknesses of adivasis (tribals) and this was 'well' exploited by private interests who about 20-25 years ago began felling trees in return for alchohol.

With the trees, went the livelihoods of this hunter and gatherer community. With the absence of trees, there is also absence of rain which has left this region caught in a 6 year long continuous drought. This region is also rife with starvation deaths and especially malnutrition deaths of children all throughout the year. There are many more such places...

Today the average number of days of employment in this area is 7-8 days a year (which is still higher than some other places where it ranges from 0-4 days), because of which most residents of this area are annual migrants.

In the photograph there are a few adivasis working on a govenrment project building some sort of a bridge which will last for a few weeks. They will get paid Rs 50 per day ( as claimed by the contractor)

Congress party president and the incumbent UPA government chairperson, Sonia Gandhi has said to the media that a new Employment Guarantee Bill will be passed during the ongoing Monsoon Parliamentary session..
