Photographer's Note

Toddy Seller : On a clear winter morning this old impoverished man was seen selling fresh toddy juice near the Digha Beach.The skinny old man undernourished and thin with old age had garnered all his courage to move his old limbs and be on the street to sell toddy juice to tourists for a few bucks.The juice preserved inside two black earthen pots ( Only one is visible in this image) and held steady on the weak shoulders of the old man by a bamboo stick.Normally fermented palm toddy juice is consumed as an intoxicant and as a cheap substitute for hard liquor ,but this old man had fresh juice extracted a few hours back from his own trees in the nearby village.The fermented palm toddy juice is called Tari in eastern India and is consumed widely all over the world,but mostly in tropical countries of Asia and Africa.

Excellent photograph showing the main subject with good sharpness and detail. The soft light of the early morning is an asset of the picture. The toddy seller certainly enjoyed the photo shoot :).

An excellent street portrait, this mans expression is really interesting, and makes a huge difference to the picture. The off centre composition is really nicely chosen, allowing great depth as we look to the crowds in the distance, while the control of depth is perfect to isolate the man and make him the centre of attention. Really nicely done

this is a very fine portrait with a strong impact. I like very much how the vendor stands out so sharply, looking into the lens and how he's been isolated from the deep and busy background. Textures are superb on the gentleman and the objects he's carrying, the blurry background is quite comprehensible too. The softness of light, shadows and colours is magnificent. Your picture shows well the hard life for this already older man. With the blurred blackground your main subject stands out well.

The crowd contributes to the atmosphere, but you managed to get the toddy seller enough detached from the rest so that they don't disturb. With the low DOF you singled him out perfectly. You made a fine and interesting portrait and tell us a bit of his sad story. I like the fresh morning light and the mild colours.

Hi Farhat,

You're capturing well this old man by a good composition, a good focus and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle which this skinny old man sells toddy juice to tourists at beach. It seems to hard work for living. It's also impressive in black earthen pots currently carried on his shoulder. And, many people and poles in back draw out well this environment.

Hello Farhat,
very good portrait which gains a lot also from interesting settings. The man which carries pots with juice has very original face and you managed to capture very well his expression. Very effective framing and natural colors. Good use of the shallow DOF to make the seller stand out from the crowd.

Hi Farhat,
Did you get a new camera? I looked at this image and thought, "Something is different about this image, its quality is outstanding." Then I glanced at what camera you used. Not to be snobbish about Nikon, but honest, I could tell you had not used a point-and-shoot. (BTW, our lenses are the same.)
I love the selective focus you employed. Congrats, and if your gear is new, "Güle güle kullan (use it laughing [i.e., in happiness])!" as we say in Turkish.
