Photographer's Note
for those who remember her concentrated face and her friend, here is what she was looking at, namely an official speech of some ladakhi officials in the local school court yard of Shashukul... pupils were all gathered and wearing their uniforms. You can see them in the BG in pinkish shirts, as well as part of the podium where the local officials were parading and making speeches...

wow this is a very nice photograph eric
much better than the ones in the links. this is similar to the type of parr-ish photography that maciek is doing nowadays .
i have a few critiques though, but only because i like this image.
1. your aperture was too big and i suspect you were not standing very close to her and had the lens fixed at 105 mm..
i think this needed a deeper depth of field, to get more clarity with respect to the pupils in the background
2. you should have gone a little close or stood on your toes or done anything else to get more of the scene in the background
in my opinion this isa composition that needed the use of a wide angle camera and not a telephoto lens
but i'm quite glad that you composed it this way
take care :)

Wow, this is a very different picture for you, showing the back of someones head and not their face.
I do agree with Sohrab that you need some more clarity on the background, since the picture is about what she is looking at. But I still like it though and think it's a very original view.

Nice idea, but I share Sohrab's opinion there's a main flaw in the execution, bokeh is not only total blur : there are several qualities of it, according to the aperture you may chose and your distance to the subject.
The difficult thing is about handling it all over and getting subjects that would be instantly understood though wrapped into a nice bokeh, here you have two qualities of blur :
- the pinkish monks quality is almost ideal to your pic, we can read this part without any problem,
- then the yellow bright thing is only a blob tomy eyes I can't figure whether this is a simple door or 2 yellow characters standing. .. and this is VERY ennoying to your pic becasuse 1- this is the strong point of the image 2- the look of the woman attarcts us towards this precise direction.
I suppose you were quite close to the foreground subject and this is why you got this extreme blur, I don't know whether the D70 has this feature included but it is very useful to look through your viewfinder using the DoF control, you'll see the exact amount of blur the result will give... I think your options would have been either step closer to your subject and use the wider end of your lens (wide ends give less bokeh) or close your aperture somewhere near f/6.3 would have been better.

I like this one Eric, because of the DOF and I also enjoy looking at those beads in the collar.. The shape of the Ladakhi hat is also extremely cute..
J'y suis attaché.. attaché à un chapeau, mon dieu ce qu'il va chercher là!!

Hi Eric,
I think that including part of this woman's face (cheek, nose, forehead something to indicate who is behind the hat) would help this picture be more self-explanatory. This picture stands well with the others in the series but not too well completely by itself or without any explanation what we are looking at. I do like the blurred image/background - I just wish more of it could be visible and less of woman's hat, which strongly dominates this picture.

Such a great idea. Maybe a deeper DOF? I still like the concept though. Good colors too.
BTW, how are you my friend. I met a DPChallenge friend in person today..the first time to meet a person I only know in the internet. It was interesting. So when are you coming over here?

Hi Eric;
I think the composition of the shot is good, the detail in the womans hat, and the color saturation; however I find the DOF a bit too shallow, and the backdrop a bit too out of foucs. I think it would have added more intrigue in the photo if more were in focus.
(ie: I can make out people purple things in front with dark dots on top, which I presume are people? Other then that- very hard to tell mate).
Warmest regards as always Eric,
- Dan

In a way this reminds me of my "breaking the . rules" shot. Maybe because of the hat hehe. Actually i think ther is more tehn that. I get the same asosiations when lookign at this one as i did when seing that girl iin the park. It seems thoughfull in a way that i have a dificult time describing. I think more dof would work great, as have been suggested, but in a way it would also turn it in to a different picture. Now the focus is on her and one can only wonder what goes on in her head. With more DoF she oudl have been put in to a different concept and the whole picture would give us different associations. i don't think there is any right or wrong or better or worse, only diffrent messeges. Great pic Eric.

Hi Eric. I like this quite a lot. I like that you have foregone the basic head shot and looked for something different. I agree with Sohrab about the need for a wider angle lens completely and I somewhat agree that a narrower aperture would be helpful too. I don't think you needed to go really small, maybe just a stop or so smaller. Good exposure.

Eric
this is indeed a very classic shot with the apt details which makes the composition very interesting
