An Evening in Calcutta : This is a colorful shot from Free School Street in Central Calcutta very close to Sudder street,which many of you may be aware of.The Free School area is famous for cheap hotels and eateries. Many foreign visitors reside in these cheap hotels. The used book and record shops sport an eclectic collection due to trade with generations of budget travellers the world over. The street also has the house where William Makepeace Thackeray,the nineteenth century English novelist was born in, the West Bengal Fire Services headquarters is also situated here as well as Kalman's, a shop of Hungarian origin.

I like how you've organized the presentation of this simple street scene using the perspective of the facades on one side and that of the parked car on the other. Thus, it's easy to follow the movement of the people and have a glimpse of their habits and attitudes. Excellent depth and clarity favour your presentation too. Oh dear, this is so nostalgic to me it almost makes me cry:-). So many times I've walked this street, eaten in these restaurants, stayed in the cheap (and not so cheap) hotels of this area, starting 40 years ago. Nostalgia aside, it's a very good night shot with lots of human activities, superb light management, good colours and perfect sharpness. A photo full of wonderful Calcutta atmosphere.

This is not exactly how I pictured Calcutta in my mind. It is very modern, although the people, the sense of movement and dynamism were not a surprise. I love the colours, the lights and the sense of excitement and fun. Excellent light control and great composition.

Quiet street with restaurants and a small activity the night you've taken the photo. Calcutta is famous for differents recipes of fish offered in both indian and chinese restaurants

has less noise for a compact camera and
that you will see in the picture.

Hi Farhat,

Even without the streets being packed with people, this still feels busy and lively...and as you noted, very colorful! These are some of the most enjoyable photos for me, I love getting a sense of the "real" life from a given city, and this conveys the daily...or should I say 'nightly'...workings of its inhabitants. A very nice composition showing many different elements with a conveyance of the nighttime atmosphere. Simple and effective, just as it should be! :) Thanks for sharing the view.
