Photographer's Note

In 1997 myself and a small team spent an intensive five weeks as guests of Vedchhi PradeshSewa Samiti to make a video film entitled 'From the Seeds Of Satyagraha'. The filming (wider purposes than the Seeds film) documented tribal life and customs in the Valod Taluka and Dangs District of South Gujarat. The 'Seeds' film itself aimed to show the impact of Gandhian inspired thought and action on rural development in the area.

Ultimately (after we had left Valod) this trip nearly ended in my personal demise but in true rubber ball fashion I'm still around to tell the tale! In the absence of a camera (a very difficult decision to go to India without one) all the stills were taken on a very inferior facility on a small S-VHS camera.

This is the last picture in this series and was taken from an early morning session when we were filming the local milk co-op at the VPSS. A very foggy start with many people riding and walking out of the mist and then in the distance this girl carrying her load. She overtook the old woman (bringing pappad to another nearby co-operative) and I caught her at this point . The bicycle belongs to an adivasi who brought two large churns strapped to it.

This is arguably the most 'distressed' picture in terms of quality in this bunch but I love this image as it is (I don't long for my camera to have been there as I do with some others in this series) - I guess it is partly remembering the beauty of the moment - but I also like (in this case) it's roughness, the leakage of colour (the reds) - it's impressionistic as opposed to pin sharp nature. I love the relationships in it and the information it contains.
