Udaipur Village, Madhya Pradesh

Rilsa, an adivasi (tribal), aged 55, does his household chores while his nephew sits at the doorway of his house. In 2 years, his hut, his half acre land on which he does subsistence farming, his village as well as 72 other villages in this area will be submerged because of the dam that has been built in this area.

He will have no option but to migrate to the city where his son lives and earns his living by cutting sugarcanes. He fears he will now survive for long if he goes to the city.

For many years now, people have been displaced because of the construction of dams.. The Narmada Bachao Andolan (save the river, narmada) is perhaps the most well known anti dam movement in India and its impact has been felt in many countries in the west as well which have reviewed their policies on dams. However here in India dams continue to be built and year by year thousands get displaced..
