Photographer's Note
Night out in the market with Sandip. Sandip has got the skill to put strangers at ease, which helps him get very good photos. I had especially gone with him that evening, so that I could pickup this skill from him. According to him when you talk to your subject, make him at ease & then take his/her photo, you breathe life into the photograph.
We were in the night flower market inside Russel Market situated in Central Bangalore (now called Bengaluru). It was past 7.30 pm in this indoor market, being lit up by incandescent lamps in the shops.
"Chacha, kya main aapka ek photo le sakta hoon?" we asked in Hindi, following Sandip, meaning "Uncle can I take your photograph?" This brought a quizzed smile on the flower seller’s face. He must have been around his mid sixties, and perhaps he was wondering what on earth are these two small fellows with cameras trying to do inside the market & why do they want to take my photograph? But a faintest of nods with his head meant Yes, & I took this shot. When I showed him the picture on my camera’s LCD, his mouth opened a bit with a thin smile.
Tech details :
ISO 400
F length 147 mm,
Exposure time : 1/13 sec, Handheld
This is how Sandip saw this same man, called him "Chacha in Transition". Beautiful in B&W.

Bonjour Angshu
I remember some of your shots from this market and here 'Uncle' ;) seems to be comfortable and looks quite relax in front of your camera! It is a bit grainy, but nonetheless, it's an interesting portrait. Is behind him a hair dresser?
Have a nice sunday

Hi Angshu,
Trying some portrait in India! Good one here, with off center and this garland on a line of thirds dividing the picture in a nice way, the narrow DOF prevents the BG from being disturbing
Well done

Hello "Mr. B,"
Your superb note reinforces a excellent portrait of the flower seller. The light management is very good, with an extraordinarily sharp image. the Leica lens on your camera has served you well. And I agree with Sandip and you both, it is highly desirable to have the subject relax photograph, and to offer a window to their soul.

Hi Angshuman,
Thanks Sandip for sharing the tip on how to photograph a person to make them at ease. Superbly captured ... I like the casualness of the pose and the glitter on the man's eyes. Well composed with very good skin tone color. Excellent work! tfs

Hi Angshuman,
This one is a great portrait of this flowerseller, in a capture inside the market very well realized, with a great game of the light and the shades on his face, and a few very beautiful colors.
It is a magnificent work, I like its life and its spontaneity.
Friendly regards,

Hi Angshuman,
A nice portrait of the flowerseller, the point of view is showing an expression of happiness of the man. The photo is clear and precise. When you ask the people to take their photo, are they cooperative ? Well done, have a nice day.

Angshuman,
nice work in getting the person easy to get an outstanding portrait. The inclusion of his product is a very good one. Portraits of working class should always be self-explanatory and you just did that. I wonder if using less F length (possibly in the range of 55mm) you could have achieved a more shallow DOF and blurred more the background with that other person. Just a thought!

Olá Angshu, very good straight portrait. It's allways nice to hang out with someone that works well with people. We can feel that he is confortable with you, which makes his look stands out in a natural way. The 1/13s doesn't deliver the best sharpness, but it's still quite good and the lighting is well managed. The framing is excellent.
Friendly regards,
ricardo

Hello dear Angshuman,
very good portrait of this man with lovely array of colors. The night lights and toning are well managed. I like it, he looks very naturally at you...At 1/13 its quite sharp, a steady hand you have!. But have you used Neatimage or alike to try to have less grain ? some of the textures, particularly on his face and beard look like that but of course I may be wrong. Personally, I would prefer more grain and not that slightly plasticky appearance. I am really interested to know.
TFS, Warm regards

Hello Angshuman,
I think that the composition is great with clever placement of the 'mala' to the right of the man and the photo is a testament to the good use of available light. I think with the iso this high, some noise was unavoidable.
Thanks for sharing
Kamran
