No trip of Bali would be complete without a picture of sunset at Pura Tanah Lot. In my opinion no visitor should give this magnificent spectacle a miss. This is not exactly a sunset shot...taken at 5.36 pm Bali time, the sun actually set a good 15 minutes after I took this picture.

Pura Tanah Lot – the famous seaside temple in the Tabanan Regency, is one of the six cardinal temples of Bali. Tanah means earth and Lot means South or sea.

It was around 4.30 in the evening as we weaved our way past the street with shops on both sides, selling touristy souvenirs like Balinese art, T-shirts, jewellery & trinkets etc…goes without saying, at a high “tourist” price. I remember my friend telling me before my trip "In Bali, don’t forget to wear a purple/blue tee-shirt with the inscription “I’m not a tourist” or “I don’t want to buy anything” in large white capital blocks. This place’s a tourist spot. Better call it a trap!"

As expected the place was teeming with tourists and locals alike. We entered the temple complex after paying the 10,000 Rupiah (about USD 1) entrance fees. The temple is actually constructed atop a large, jagged outcrop of rock just off the coast. It is accessible only during low tide. The temple itself is quite modest consisting of two shrines with tiered roofs (7 and 3), a few small buildings and two pavilions. The enclosed compound which you see on the left is out of bounds for public.

Balinese love to sit on the beach or on a bluff overlooking the temple in the later afternoon, watching the tides change and enjoying the silhouettes of the temple meru against the setting sun.

In fact, after roaming around and down for an hour, the high tide was approaching & as the sun started it's descent. We proceeded to the left (east) where all the view point places were reserved by bars...no choice. I settled down with a coconut (water), then a beer, then another, waiting for the sun to descend. The light changed every minute & my finger was also pressing the camera's shutter also every minute. What a view!
