I'm certain this picture won't attract much interest from TE'ers, who seem to prefer saturated colours and bold forms over frames cluttered with detail, but I'm posting it anyway, in the name of "learning about the world through photography".

Artisan painting pottery in a workshop in Kyoto, Japan. I'm told that he's particularly renowned for his skill. Kyoto pottery is admired throughout Japan for its quality.

For such a technologically advanced nation, Japan still has a surprising (though ever-decreasing) number of cottage industry craft workshops, home-based family businesses specialising in traditional arts such as ceremonial fans, prayer beads or hand-painted pottery.

This is not a tourist-oriented factory, it is a small workshop in a back alley in Kyoto, where this man and a woman (his wife?) work quietly producing pottery on a small scale.

I underexposed the shot slightly in the hope of avoiding blown-out highlights, but unfortunately they couldn't be saved.
