Photographer's Note
In the Shan State, community markets are held on a traditional rotating basis in which each town and village within a given area hosts a market every five days. Hence a five-day market held on Saturday in Kalaw,. for example, will come around again five days later. In this case, it was held on a Friday, due of the Phaung Daw U Festival, so thaty everybody could attend to the boat races the last day.
The schedule in the Kalaw-Inle Lake corridor is as follows:
Day 1: Phaung Daw U Monastery (Inle Lake), Kalaw, Shwenyaung.
Day 2: Pindaya, Nyangshwe
Day 3: Heho, Kyoung (on the way to Pindaya).
Day 4: Ywama, Taunggy, Aungban.
Day 5: Pwehla (on the way to Pindaya).
It's always a great time to walk around these markets, early in the morning. This is Kalaw, before departing for a two days trekking to Inle Lake.
