Photographer's Note
Thanaka, which is made from tree bark, is used widely in Burma as a protection against the sun. Walking through the village early in the morning I was able to talk to the people as they got ready for work in the fields or as here a visit to the market.
Getting ready in her modest home, applying thanaka to her face.
Almost all the materials in building her home come from her trees.

Hello Elaine,
It's a well timed photo of the lady applying the thanaka to her face. I always had the impression that thanaka is more commonly used for decoration, rather than as protection against the sun. By the way, the construction of the building is just as interesting as the woman and her mirror.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Elaine,
This is a delightful photograph.
I could imagine the parallels, in the west, where women apply their moisturiser, or suncream, before venturing out!
This is such a natural and beautifully composed photograph! Well done!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Elaine,
The people are very smart and know the sun is good but dangerous.
This picture in black & white, is absolutely not bad.
Excellent composition nice presentation too.
Very well done, TFS.

Hi Elaine
This is a lovely everyday image nicely framed probably she's unaware of your lens, but I find it poignant too - due to the situation in Burma now. Great candid would be nice to see the end result...

Hello Elaine, a delightful picture. In such a tightly framed shot we learn quite a lot about this lady and her home.
I wonder, did she know that you were taking this photo?
Once again the black and white is the perfect choice.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Elaine
At first I thought that she was reading.
Thanaka and its use are new to me but then Myanmar is the one SE Asian country that I haven't visited. Another good photo of village life.
cheers

Hi Elaine,
so you have captured a lady while she was applying her make-up.
I suppose I have seen sometimes ladies applying make-up in their cars on the way to work in America or in the public transport in Europe.
I see you are emphasizig how environmentally friendly the people are there or how much direct contact with the nature they have,
I suppose indeed people may have crossed the line in using the nature resources and now they must suffer consequences.
Very well seen and captured,
M

Hello Elaine,
This is a beautiful shot. Everything is so natural, and we get to observe the woman applying her thanaka. I like the pattern of the thatched wall beside her, and the slanted roof above her head. Take care!
