The Crystalline Silence, a photo from Sagarmatha, East

Photographer's Note

For some reason, most trekkers to Everest Base Camp stay on the trail and rarely venture into the surrounding wilderness. I decided to do some exploring and found this spectacular alpine lake with a reflection of Ama Dablam. Clouds obscured the view in the afternoon but parted just after sunset to reveal some of the most beautiful twilight colors I've ever witnessed. The cloud layer that had surrounded me all afternoon can be seen receding back down the valley. It's still catching some light from below.

A fabulous photo - everything looks great, colours, light, reflections, sharpness and the hint of rocks below the surface. Thanks for the filter notes as well.

I agree about stepping off the beaten track, did this a few times when I was in Langtang. It was superb being off on my own in such a spectacular place.

Hello Michael,

The colors are so beautiful, and the reflection of the mountains in the lake brings some light in the dark atmosphere.
The foreground is empty, but we can see the stones into the water.

I spent a night in Pheriche early last month - but I saw nothing resembling this scene - as you would say I am a trekker who didn't venture off the track (well at least not at Pheriche)! Absolutely brilliant with beautiful colours and a perfect reflection. Tfs, Marlene
