My friend's cousin and her neices in Rizal Park in Manila, right on the waterfront. It was a hot sunny day, and most filipinos use umbrellas to provide shade.

This is an interesting topic... I was actually considering doing a series on this myself as I just had a discussion with my friend about the use of umbrellas - the fact that they're not for the rain! And this photo proves it. Even living in the US (near Asian populations), I see numerous women, old and middle age, using their umbrellas to combat the sun rather than the rain. Of course, the correct term should then be "parasol."
