Balbal, Altay Republic. Kalbak Tash Stone sculptures. The legendary 'rock face'

Ancient Turkish warrior stone figurine also known as Balbal or Menhir.

Klaback Tash is a unique complex of ancient petroglyphs. The name of this place translates as “flat stone”. The flattened rocky hill, located in the valley of River Chuya, consists of more than 500 compositions all together about 5,000 engravings. They were all made with the technique of carving with stone or metal tools. The oldest ones date back to the 8th millennium BC. The most common images depict animals easily found in the Altai as well as unknown predator species. Scenes of hunting were also drawn. Some inscriptions refer to the ancient Turkish time. To this day 30 lines of runic letters have been identified, forming the Yenisei alphabet.

Hello Michel,
You have very interesting photos in your gallery. I was intrigued by this balbal. I like your composition and depth of field.
Your note taught me something new: You said kalpak tash means flat stone. In Anatolian Turkish, we say tash to mean stone, too, but a kalpak is a cap that can be folded flat. So a kalpak is literally a "flat." Thanks for the lesson!
