Photographer's Note
5am on a Monday morning in Singapore, and I find myself at Sri Mariamman Temple on Temple Street- amidst a Hindu Fire Walking Festival.
Thousands of male devotees, many who have been fasting for days before hand, decend upon the temple to fulfill their vows before the Hindu holiday of Deepavali (Nov. 11th).
A truly remarkable experience!

Unfortunately, I didn't have my tripod with me, and with the amount of people, don't think I really had room to put it down! I shot this one hand held with my 75-300mm lens, using a film speed of 1600, shutter of 1/13.
It did manage to blur a bit, but I think it kind of adds to the feeling of the photo. What do you think? Comments and critiques are always welcome!

I found the photo really great (compo, timing, colors etc). But infact I would have preferred a more sharp shot (accoriding to your interesting note of the pic). Maybe the walking man a little moved is interesting but the remaining people not so interesting as they could. You don't have on your Canon 300D the file to make available the 3200 asa option? I think there are some "unoficial" available.
take care
ps
I have walked on these things and I assure is better not to look down as the man!!!

Great. The atmosphere is exciting, and I agree that the blur adds something - mainly because I have the impression that the central figure is sharper. I don't know if that's luck, or whether you managed to achieve that in PS, but it puts the attention where it needs to be. I like the overall yellow tone, too.

I remember this well. The massive line up of devotees on the street. The mad crush of onlookers vying for position. I remember climbing onto a window sil!
And what I remember most was: that the devotees were often scared to death of what they set out to do! I remember some making a mad dash across. I remember one almost falling. And I remember a whole lot nursing their aching feet after the ordeal!
Nice pic that brings back memories, the blur isnt too bad, esp since it radiates from the central figure.
Cheers man!

a very difficult situation. Always difficult to get a good result in such a situation. I think you did manage very well.
I am amazed by the scene too. I never came acroos such a scene in India myself..
Nice catch Dan..

The motion blur works here I think. There's a sense of haste in the person who is going into the pit, while the rest, it is more of agitation, impatience. Scene like this doesn't require pin sharpness. It needs more than that. It needs the atmosphere, situational qualities of the event. Just as much as the warm golden hues you have got here. Anyway, you could try this camera as a backup. Panasonic Lumix FZ20; its lens is Leica 36-432mm with F/2.8 with Image Stabilizer. I think you could get it for like 1000 Sing Dollars.

Hi Dan
The warm color tones perfectly match the subject matter. Interesting cultural spectacle, & good use of selective focus & blur to isolate & emphasize the main subject, & to convey drama & movement. Great work!

Very good composition with an excellent DOF. The walking people are well detailed from the back awaiting people. Colors and framing are excellent in this very well built composition telling a story.
I like it

hi dan, thats exactly the type of photo experiences i adore to see on te - not only the perfect captures but also a great spiritual feeling of what the photographer wants to experience together with the audience of the scene (that was my idea of the series from kenya) - and that is exactly what i have found in this scene; one of my favorites definitely;
well, i read the note and the critiques now and decided to come back: i do not see why there is a concern about the blur; i find it absolutely inadequate to have this type of action shot perfectly sharp (wonder if it is phisically possible at all?) and if my statement is right (hope it is, at least for me) then the 2nd difficult question rises: in we are to accept unsharp pic, then to waht extend? and again - i find it difficult to answer; i think that this pic is exactly what i would expect from such a scene - the main "model" sharp enough , rest being a suplement or a background for the scene should NOT be sharp;
for me its a perfect shot, period!

Amazing shot in many aspect, most importantly you have been able to capture the mood and atmosphere, even without your note we should be able to tell that this is some kind of religious event, and a painfull at that.
Apart from the mood, I like how it's composed, with the crowd staring at the path, and the left side has some breathing room but it's not empty or boring.
I wish the image was sharper, although it isn't too bad. I don't know how this could have been shot better, in such situations I use burst mode, so I avoid the shake created by pressing the shutter in all but the first shot in the sentence, and had a good results at even slower speeds, but that's all at wide angle, can't image this would help much with long lens.

Hi Dan
And I went all the way by bus to a same festival near Madurai, I arrived when it was over, frustration, then I made the nightblower as I didn't want to leave empty handed. So I like to see this shot and I sort of envy you that you were in time. A good POV not evident in such a crowd, and a marvellous dominating yellow colortone here, nicely done, try to get you one next year.

Hi Dan,
An amazing panning shot with a high technical skill! Blur of the people watching the firewalker is exquisite. This warm colour is also so beautiful.
Best wishes, Hisashi
