Photographer's Note

The Esala Perahera is held annually in Kandy to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Its origins go back to the 4th C, but the Perahera, as we know it today, dates from 1775.

It is one of Asia's most magnificent festivals with up to a 100 elephants and more than a million spectators. A much smaller Perahera is organized in Arundhapura.

We were fortunate to attend the 2011 edition. We spent one day "backstage", attending the preparations, the dressing of the elephants, etcetera...and one day as spectators in the crowd.

I recently revisited some of the pictures I took and hope you like them as much as I do.

Here you see a decorated elephant on the left and the fires that are used to light up the nightly parade, with a hint of the vast crowds in the background.

An amazing spectacle!
