Photographer's Note

These decorations in Bangkok are not meant to celebrate my 100th post but the 60th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne.
All trees lining Bangkok's main avenues were decorated that way... it was almost dark, but a very colorful square, i was lucky to have a little rainbow with in the frame.
The celebrations will be held on a grand scale in a jubilant and festive mood for a two-year period. Thai people are excited about witnessing and joining many of the activities that are held for this auspicious and rare occasion.

Although His Majesty the King was officially proclaimed the ninth monarch of the House of Chakri in accordance with ancient royal traditions, on 5 May 1950, he assumed his kingship on 9 June 1946. So 9 June 2006 will mark the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne, or the 60th year of his reign. His Majesty has become the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history as well as in today’s world. The Government has decided to begin the celebrations for His Majesty’s record-breaking reign of 60 years on 1 January 2005. The celebrations will continue until 31 December 2006.

The decision was made based on the fact that Thailand celebrated the 50th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne, or the Golden Jubilee of his reign, for two years from 1 January 1995 to 31 December 1996, so the 60th anniversary of his reign should also follow the same practice. For Thai people, the 60th anniversary is considered an important milestone of life, the completion of the fifth 12-year cycle, and a special celebration is usually arranged on this occasion.
