Photographer's Note
.
As I continuously admitted, I am a novice to photography, and a kid to a camera. All my "photographic experience" is to press its shutter button. After being given 1,000 of green smiles from your great support, patronage, kindness, encouragement and sharing for my improvement daily. However, I feel still too bad in experience. So, I purposely posted my first try on capturing a portrait no good but meaningful two days ago which I try to made her smile but didn't recheck tecnique data before shut. In Vietnamese, we used to say "tot khoe xau che" (display the goods and hide the bads). Well, I think it is the best tactic to do business. But I am learning! If I don't let you see my weakness, how am I going to improve, or to adjust myself? I am not a professional photographer. I am in my first days at kindergarten!
I have received your great useful comment. I think that your wonderful supports as one of you even prescribed for me "stronger" medicine (in this case, I am a patient), and concluded with big quotation by a legendary war-photographer: "If your photos are not good enough, then you are not close enough."(Robert Capa)
*
Taking the advice from all of you, today, I'd like to report to you my first homework. I took this daily life right in front of my home. I photographed this broom vendor just because his gentle smile verifies his happy life and an elevated spirit. Everyday, he walks from morning to evening along the roads of urban and rural with his rusty bicycle loaded of the colorful brooms to save some dollars for his family. Although, his work is hard, I would like to share his proud and fun daily life sending the brooms to clean life.
Please give me your frank critiques. Thanks.

P/S: Series of my photos for "My Son Cultural World Heritage" will be continued tomorrow. I am sincerely sorry.
Best regards.
Huy

Hi Huy,
Actually a very great photo for a first portrait. I like particularly the prevlence of different colours in the photograph. Perhaps a horizontal orientation would have been prefferable allowing you to capture the the hole shirt of the man.

Hi Huy,
this is a good portrait !
This vendor seems to be very friendly and funny.
I like the big smile and the patriotic hat !
Beautiful colors, too.
The focus point must be on the vendor eyes, here it's on the brushes I think.

After reading your note I would expect a bad photo… But that’s not the case. :-)
In fact it’s quite nice. The happy expression of the man is very well captured, and the control of the exposure very good as we can see a lot of details both in the shadow and light areas. This is particularly good in the man’s face. Besides this, the placement of him in an uncentered position works very well by placing him in a strong position of the frame and at the same time allowing us to observe all the funny brooms he’s selling.
Regarding the frame I would have chosen one with the same size in the sides and top/bottom. The frame as it is creates a sensation of square which drains dynamic out of the image.

I am wordless in front of this capture.
Looking back to your entire album, I think "portrait photography" may be your right path. Let try some more, combine with "street pictures". Make sure you click at time when the subject's eyes loking straight to your lens plus a soft background...
I wish this picture came from my camera. This is a lesson for me to learn.
Thanks for your great contribution.

Hello Huy,
A fine portrait by any standards. Very colourful, crisp and clear. The placement of the man to one side is well done. Perhaps just a little "cluttered" with objects, detracting a little from the man, but that is a minor criticism. Overall, a most successful shot that pleases the eye greatly.

Its agood one anyway whith color and excellent depth, your modele is also very interesting in this situation.
As he framing is free in numeric i suggest you take profit from this facitity in cutting up the red and green "plumeaux" and give the elbow from the subject to be more in thirs. This could have improved the capa words.*But you are zooming already tight and this is a good one.
I like it

Hi Huy,
You did your home work very well. Sharpness is excellent now as well as perfectly controlled DoF (i.e. sharp main subject while the background is still blurred and doesn't disturb). The shot is very colorfull too. Excellent work!
Thanks,
Marek

Huy - I think this, along with your humble exposition of what you feel are the reality of your skills hang beautifully together because - in some ways - this breaks all sorts of rules of composition but nevertheless works beautifully - such a good. strong, vibrant, colourful portrait full of the detail of this man's work - great picture! I really like this a lot.
