Continuing the topic from yesterday, this graphic picture was recorded in a Hanoi restaurant where patrons patiently wait for service.

Vietnam’s dog-meat “industry” falls far behind China’s and Korea’s. In Korea alone, 2 millions dogs are tortured and slaughtered each year for fraudulent medicinal foods and tonics. Although human consumption of dogs is illegal, a flourishing industry exists within the Korea society. Illegal and unsanitary dog farms are hidden away in the countryside where breeders raise their dogs for the butchers.



Yes, as observed by Tristan Savatier, in the U.S., people get prison terms for what Asians do to dogs and for what europeans do to horses. But in India, people also get jailed for what Westerners do to cows.



According to wikipedia, in Vietnam, while its not considered a mainstream meat, dog meat is throughout the country. It is more popular in the North than in the South. It is sometimes consumed by a small segment of the population in a semi-ritualistic fashion. This is almost invariably towards the end of the lunar month (for reasons of astrology and luck), in a restaurant which mainly exists to serve dog meat (and may close for half the month), with a group of men eating together and drinking alcohol. In other words, dog meat serves as a male bonding exercise.

Dog meat is supposed to raise the libido and is considered unsuitable for women. However, it is not uncommon for women to eat it.

While in Vietnamese, dog meat translates to "thịt chó", places selling dog meat in the South tend not to use that term in their names. They instead use "thịt cầy" (Chow Chow meat) and sometimes resorted to clever wordplays to hide their true nature. In the North, the term "thịt chó" is used widely.

In Nhật Tân Street, Tây Hồ District, Hanoi, there are many restaurants serving dog meat, often imitating each other. Customers, seated on mats, will spend their evenings sharing plates of dog meat and drink beer.

Popular ways of preparing dog meat include grilling cubes/patties of meat or stews. Dogs' feet are particularly popular.




