Photographer's Note
Phong Dien floating market some miles away from Cantho on the Mekong. End of market time, around 9AM, boats are already empty from goods, the day has been fine for business, it's now time for a bit of rest, tomorrow will be a same but other day.
I was impressed with the density of paddleboats here, a labyrinth of boats and stalls, I then tried to get an image that would show the market confusion but also bring a rythm. That's the worst issue with markets : there's so much interesting to see in so little place. I decided I would cling my frame to the paddle handles.
Oops, someone doesn't have the statutory hat, here.

Oh, the heretic, how dares he to not conform and ruin your perfect shot. I love the use of the paddles to evoke the emotion of a busy market.

I think it's the way I always imagined how daily life in the Far East goes.
Busy, harsh, vivid, colourful... And you succeeded in making an image of it!
Well done Luko, and thank you for sharing.

A bold composition many elements and yet tied together with a simple paddle or two or three or... Very nice.

Very interesting choice of subject. Any chance we get to see some more of this?

The play of shapes and colours made a vivid shot.. It looks both quiet and busy.

This is really nice, Luko. You captured the feel of a busy market quite well. And I do like that outsider wearing the baseball hat. Guess he's not into conforming with the rest of the folks. Lots to look at here, colors are wonderful and the perspective works quite well in this shot. You said many times before that shooting market scenes is a real challenge and you did very well here. Well done, Luko!

Very, very nice job with keeping an order to a chaotic scene. Although there is so much going on here, it is not at all difficult for us to recognize what we are looking at. That can often be difficult in such a case. Your colors and exposure all seem very good to me as well. I know because of the hats, it is virtually impossible, but it would be great if we could see a little more detail in the faces. That being said, the shot is still great on its own.

so much complexity, but it all holds together. Maybe I would have cropped off the couple of figures on the right edge, but it's also nice to have another hat in the background - perhaps that's why you kept them?

Very nice rythm of hats and paddles. I find these market shots very difficult - as you say, there's so much going no, and it's difficult to find a unity amidst the chaos, and an anchor point. Here the woman standing on left is essential to the composition - she belongs within the overall theme, but by standing up she gives a focus for the composition.

Wonderful picture. The conical hats are worn only by women....so the cap is the perfect juxtaposition.

exceptional shot with lots of chaos handled well. a peek at a market place with all its characters and possiblities. like that the food items are present in the foreground and the vendors are in the midground. very fine image portraying a daily occurance in a country far from mine.

Women's hats line serve as guide in the whole picture to keep our attention on the many details displayed. Then, the paddles relay our viewing, keeping us always in the image. The standing woman serves also as an eye-catching pole. A dense and rich image, with a perfect background echoing with the main group of people.

Anotehr Asian traffic scene; but how much more interesting than a street full of Hondas! The triangles of the hats suit the jumbled angles of the paddles very well. I like the other hat; tradition rules but there are other influences at work.

Hello Luko,
Probably the best picture I happen to see on TE these days. A mish mash of peddles and the white triangle hats, all against a simple background: I really appreciate very much - Inspires me a lot.

I am maybe surprising myself a little here - this is the kind of image I might see endless relationships and areas of interest in but I only see it superficially at the moment - I see a shot of something that is wonderfully complex and challenging to the eye but I don't see the eye of the artist as much as I would like - have you - have I - created a level of expectation about your work that demands more from you than what I see here? I disagree with Izzet....I find that pretty empowering as a photographer in my own right.....there is level of incoherence in this image which somehow doesn't satisfy me that you have made as much from such a wonderful subject as you could have done.....I like that you have seen the possibility but it is missing something. So easy to go with the flow of praise and then reading your note even easier - "market confusion and rhythm" - for me perhaps more of the former and less of the latter......perhaps more of a compositional focus on the guy with the different hat - a different take on the shape and positioning of the OOF space top and right...the person to the right with the oar across the face...i don't know.......I'm against the grain on this one.......
