Photographer's Note

Taken on the Windward side of Barbados.

My Dad loved road trips. When I was a child, Dad would build different devices so my older sister and I could sleep in the back seat while he and mother took turns driving through the night to avoid the worst of the Southwestern desert heat. One year we would travel to Wisconsin to see my mother’s parents, stopping along the way to see his sister in Kansas and her sister in Iowa; the next year we’d go to California to see Dad’s brothers. However, each trip was different. We’d go to California via Vancouver Island in British Columbia; and to Wisconsin via Kentucky, detouring to visit a new National Park, Mammoth Caves, and meet family members from Dad’s side who had remained in Kentucky. I remember commenting that there sure were a lot of people in the park for a week night and learning that they were all relatives. We almost never stayed in motels or ate in restaurants, staying with family and friends and eating sandwiches that had been frozen to withstand the day’s heat.
In my 14 years younger, sister’s stories, the trips were to Annual Meetings of the Laboratory Tech’s Society. They were more upscale with motels and restaurants and air-conditioned cars; still there were new parks and new states to visit. I would guess that Dad visited all the states except Alaska. When I moved to Hawaii, they visited twice.

Dad believed that he would awaken with the love of his life by his side and he was eager join her. That night, before she knew Dad was gone, my daughter-in-law dreamed of Mom & Dad meeting in a sunny meadow for a picnic. I have been blessed to have such loving parents for such a long time. My husband’s parents were both dead by the time he was fourteen.

Some of you will remember that I wrote of my parents’ love for each other in Sunset Time and posted a picture of them in the WS. I wrote of my mother’s death in The Adventurous Gardener. I would like to thank all of you who listened to this love story, no points please.
