Photographer's Note

The Panama Canal has been a boon to shippers for a century, but in recent years ships have gotten larger, some are too large to fit in the 33.5-meter-wide, 320-meter-long locks, and still have to go around South America to go from the Pacific to the Atlantic, or vece-versa. Therefore Panama has undertaken the construction of two new sets of locks that will be 54 meters wide and 427 meters long. The projected completion date is to be in 2014.
This photo shows some of the progress of the constructions work at Lake Miraflores.
