A symbol of stability in Europe

This border post has been erected between the County of Tyrol and the Duchy of Bavaria in ... 1557 ! Both countries were at that time part of the German- Roman empire. The post still serves the purpose of marking a state border on top of the Achen pass (940 m a.s.l.). There are not more formalities to endure when crossing this border from Austria to Germany today than to admire this old post. Isn't that progress?
A little further away on the Austrian side an old house called the "Kaiserwacht" (the Emperors's guard) can be found. And on the side of the stele you find the inscription: "An das alte Ort gesözt AD 1676" (put back to its former place AD 1676). Maybe things were not always as peaceful as today.
