Village mill of Oostkerke
Accessibility: restricted access
The Oostkerke village mill was first mentioned in 1336 and was owned by the lords of Oostkerke. Later mentions: in 1459, 1481 and in 1571 by Pourbus. It was destroyed during the 80 Years War (1568-1648). Towards the end of the war the wooden post mill was rebuilt (in 1643 to be precise). The mill burned down in 1874.
Immediately afterwards, the current stone ground sailor was built on the mound where the previous mill stood. One mill iron dates from 1643 and the mill cap bears the year 1874. There is also a memorial stone commemorating a fatal accident that occurred here in 1924 when the young miller's son was caught by one of the rotating blades of the mill. After this event, the mill was no longer milled.
I hope you like it.

Hello John,
The note indicates this mill has been left as a monument to the past for almost 100 years since the tragic accident. It is a very nice monument, which looks like it is standing in the backyard of an ordinary house. The clouds fill the sky well but leave enough blue areas to show that it was a nice and warm day.
Best regards,
Gert

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi John,
Good to see you back. That mill site has hugely long history, although this one is younger. Sidelight is perfect on the white wall. And those clouds are quite impressive too.

Hello John,
It must have been tragic for the miller to lose his son in such a random accident but still, it would be a very eco-friendly way of producing flour, if this could be fully restored.
I'm not surprised that you were tempted to photograph the mill, it is such an iconic feature in the lowland regions. This mill looks to be in good condition and makes a very fine feature set against the splendour of such a fabulous sky.
Your exposure is spot on and the colours perfectly saturated.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello John,
A womnderful sky with clouds pattern above the beautiful, yet typical windmill.
Excellent view from across the road, complement with the more modern two edifices, gate and green fence.
Good evening,
Ike

Hi John,
The trees are framing well the mill. The point of view is showing the details of the wind mill. The light is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.

Hello John, very informative notes; what a tragedy for the miller, losing his son in that way.
It was the mill set against that beautiful sky that immediately caught my eye, with the brick buildings adding extra interest.
The picture looks even better in the large version.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hallo John,
Een prachtige foto van deze molen, gezien tegen een schitterende wolkenlucht. Ook het licht was aangenaam en de lagere gebouwen en het groen geven een mooie voorgrond.

Hi John
A very well composed, exposed and captured of this charming setting & rendering of the Windmill with fine colour. Lovely crisp and clear focus where the handsome cloudscape plays the second fiddle as strong key point. A pleasure to view!

Hello John
I just read in your home page the touching dedication to your TE friends who encouraged you to keep contact despite tiredness due to your accident.
So let me tell you: This sumptuous picture of a windmill appearing as a king over the opulent clouds is the concrete cosmography of your desire to continue slowly while keeping head straight up, as you mentioned!
By the way, I thank you so much for the generous support you provided me along all those years.
Good health. Take care of you.
Met vriendelijke groeten

Hi John.
Wonderful composition with the beautiful mill, which seems to defy that spectacular sky that seems to descend on it with its clouds, an ideal environment too.
Very good color that highlights the image.
Superb brightness and sharpness.
Very well done. I like.
Have a good start to the week.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hi John,
beautiful capture of the mill. It is very photogenic by itself but you made it into a real spectacle with the amazing sky. The clouds add a dynamic touch. The colors are so well saturated and pleasant for the eye.
Excellent work,
