Mirror of trees, a photo from Oost-Vlaanderen, Flanders

Photographer's Note

An hour after zons rise I have yesterday tomorrow made this photograph, of the canal "Schipdonk" at Maldegem on 200 metres of the Belgium Netherlands borders.
This photograph I have especially dedicated to Carper "Jaap" he expects long a photograph of the canal with fog.
Hallo Jaap, hier is hij dan de lang verwachte foto met een beetje mist, ik heb er wel moeten vroeg voor opstaan om deze te kunnen nemen, gelukkig ging juist het winter uur in voege.
This canal much more is not used for ships, only for detritus water from France. Water arrives in the North sea, but its altitude different there to differ, and these are treated by sluices.

This picture I have cropped to a better composition.

The colours are really, only a green frame and name.

This is one of your best theme, John: the fog, the long diagonal of tall trees towards a vanishing point, the canal: all in a moody atmosphere: the real Autumn. I'd like to have a poster of it. One of your best.

Did you stand in water risking to catch cold ? :-)
I can't call the shot calming, for there is something uneasy in fact that the crossing of lines is so close to the edge of the picture.

Just stunning. The colors are marvelous, the trees are marvfelous, the reflection is marvelous everything is jsut beaytiful.
Only thing I would change is the frame I'm not a big fan of frames and yours I feel takes a bit away from your stunning composition.

Two things are observed : (1) reflected imagery (2) the mist.
This two completed the geometry.

Wow...what amazing perspective you got here John! The fog is creating a great atmosphere and mood...and I love the way that the trees line and the reflection is "disolving" in it at the depth of the frame!

John, if it were not for the frame, this would be one of your best. The long diagonal of tree vanishing in the fog,the quietnes of the scene..so realistic you can almost feel thedamp coldness of an foggy daybreak in Autumn.
De frame is natuurlijk een kwestie van smaak. Maar de foto is heel mooi.

John ik ben vereerd,
Dit is een super foto. Dit is waar ik je eigenlijk voor het eerst, echt goed ben gaan waarderen. Je kanaal foto's. De atmosfere is geweldig goede duidelijke kleuren wegkwijnend in de mist. Uit een hele goede hoek genomen. Wat ik bij deze ook zo mooi vind, zijn de bladeren in het kanaal gevallen. John erg goed werk. Als ik er tien mocht geven gaf ik je een 9.

Des couleurs qui font chavirer les coeurs de ceux qui aiment la nature. La brume enveloppant ce canal est d'une beauté féerique.

Le canal qui disparaît à l'infini, c'est le genre de photo que tu préfères mais celle-ci me semble la meilleure de toute. Il n'y a pas de surexposition et l'ambiance est bien rendue. Bravo, John!

You are wielding your magic here again. Very good photo brought about by good POV and composition, and clear colors and textures. The only think I don't really like is the green frame (which is a matter of personal opinion),

All lines centering in one point here. Colors disappearing in the fog. The reflections are even more clear than the originals. Composition and point of view are spot on. Great one, John. I like it. (frame is a bit dominant but that's only a personal opinion)

John toch, je brengt ons alle in verlegenheid, je laatste drie foto's stralen zulk een hoge kwaliteit uit op alle vlakken zoals hier de werkelijkheid van kleuren, de diepte van de vertekening gradueel in de mist oplossend, je standpunt om dit mooi convergerend naar de zijkant toe in perspectief te brengen, de zachte contrasten en heerlijke reflectie in het water. In alle nederigheid en ere wie ere toekomt ben ik trots dat je dit Vlaanderen met het juiste timbre in beeld weet te brengen.

Hi John - I think this is one of your best. It's really beautiful how in the foreground you retained a crystal clear reflection, while towards the back the whole setting vanishes into the autumn haze. The leaves on the water contribute to the pleasant autumnal atmosphere. Very good.

Superb Shot of the autumn mist here. And of course the calm of the water and the perspective lines of the trees and the reflection add up to a very spooky scene with a fantastic atmosphere. The leaves on the water add a special touch.

Wow, a great composition of the foogy canal, John, and an excellent capture. The green frame looks a bit strange, but I trieed without it and I have to admit that this photo looks better with this frame. Excellen, very well done.

Toch eigenaardig dat we op hetzelfde moment aan hetzelfde dachten: mist = het kanaal... Ik zie dat jij er toch blijkbaar ietsje eerder bij was. Prachtig shot; die bladeren in het water, die mist, de bomenrij die langzaam verdwijnt... 't is heel mooi.

Oh lovely and moody shot - I been trying to take some similar shots here on hazy mornings - but not with very much luck - thanks John for sharing this fine view and work.

This is such a familiar sight to me, as I live pretty closeby. You have done a wonderful job in capturing the serene atmosphere of a misty morning along the canal. The fallen leaves on the water surface are a special bonus! This deserves at least two points.

Your picture has already been much analysed and praised. It deserves it. I'm surprised no one spoke of Simenon about it. The picture carries deep sadness and lonelyness that ar only contradicted by the neatness of the reflection in the foreground.
I'm not sure the framing or the frame color was a good idea.

Very attractive, misty, photo. I'm sure that in all the comments everything has been said but I had to add to it since this is really amazing. It has such a light and mysterious atmosphere to it. Perfectly calm and quiet with the fog shrouding everything in mystery and the leaves in the water. And matched with a nice, deep, perspective that dissolves into nothingness. Excellent job.

hummm,i supposed the fog here was the big hero of this great work~ it blur the background and created the gradully fading of the colors and sharpness,nice that u left a little of the right band,which kept the ballence of the foto,

I love fog, John, so I stopped to look at this one. Fantastic perspective and depth, colour and detail, the trees form an excellent diagonal and its reflections are marvellous. This one goes straight to my favourites!

Greetings John,

I have been looking back through some of your older works and something clearly happened between 2003 and 2004. Your 2003 work contains a few too many run-of-the-mill shots, but in 2004 you start producing a high percentage of stunning, quite artistic shots. This work is stunningly composed, with a contrast of vertical and diagonal lines, with the mist really working in your favour with the vanishing point really vanishing. A small criticism: I am not sure that the green you have used to frame this shot is the best possible framing colour, but otherwise a brilliant piece of work. Iain.
