STADSFEESTZAAL

A detail from the ceiling construction at the former "stadsfeestzaal". Google Translate says a "(stads)feestzaal" is a "(city) banquet hall". Possibly...the "grand ballroom of the city" might be another possible translation.

Anyway, the place was built in the early years of the 20th century by the city to house all kinds of official parties and festivities. After a shaky history it became rather rundown and derelict until it was nearly destroyed by fire in 2000.

The 'stadsfeestzaal' reopened in 2007 as a rather showy shopping center. To be honest, I seldom buy things there, but it's always a good idea to walk through it, like we did today (and the wife did buy something).

You can enter from the Meir, Antwerp's main shopping street, and then exit not far from Rubens' house with one of my favourite independent bookshops just around the corner (and I bought something there).

THIS PICTURE shows part of the gold covered ceiling. The dark circular bars underneath are for lighting. There's a fancy champagne bar underneath (but we had a drink in another place).
