Photographer's Note

ANTWERP CENTRAL STATION was built in the late 19th century in a typical eclectic style of the time. There's a vast iron hangar and an impressive domed central hall which functions as the train station proper.

This station is generally considered to be among the most beautiful train stations in the world and we are quite proud of it. There are quite a few pictures of it already on this site, here's a picture I took yesterday as I looked up after getting my train ticket to Lier. The shot was taken on an old mobile phone, but I'm very happy with the result.

THIS PICTURE is looking up in the central hall. The highest point here is some 75 metres high. I love the way this late February light falls through the big windows, it's like an enormous magical lantern showing us glimpses and fragments of the interior architecture. I absolutely love the spill-over of light at the top here, showing a bit of ceiling.

The quality of mobile phone photographs can be surprising!
I wonder how many other people remember to look up!
There are often lovely features to be seen and admired at ceiling height.
You have captured the details clearly and I like how these are framed by a dark surround.

Ik vind het Centraal Station van Antwerpen werkelijk een prachtig gebouw.
Doch op deze foto had ik het helemaal niet herkend.
Een volgende keer in Antwerpen zal ik beter moeten uitkijken en naar omhoog kijken.

Yes I have seen so many photos from this beautiful train station but for the first time I see the ceiling. Equally impressive like the rest of the structure. Interesting geometry here with dark framing.
